So I just finished watching THX 1138 for the first time.  For
those who don’t know, it is George Lucas’ first feature film.  If
you watch A New Hope, you can hear it mentioned… one of the storm
troopers says something about 1138… like a model number of a droid or
something.

Anyway, from a technical perspective it’s really pretty good.  It
is visually interesting, the shots are well composed (except for a few
things which I think he inserted later, because of him being George
Lucas and feeling compelled to mess things up by adding worthless
things to them later, as is evident in Star Wars.)
However, from a story standpoint it could have been better.  It is
hard to care about any of the characters because you feel very distant
from everyone.  You don’t really even have a clear idea of what
THX wants until the the middle of the movie… and until the very end
it doesn’t seem like there is a means by which that could possibly be
achieved.  But, I think it was beneficial for me to watch it.

  1. You get a gold star for watching that.  Here is your bonus prize: Go watch Toy Story, and in the bedroom, on the bookshelf, is a book titled THX1138. Oooh.  I know lots of secrets about Toy Story. Why? Because I’m a kind of scary individual who collects random facts about meaningless garbage. Also, I am great fun at parties. If you’re 12.
