So, if anyone is unaware, Revenge of the Sith was available for
\ndownload on the day of it’s release.  That’s right, if you so
\nchose, you could download it and watch it.  I would reccomend you
\nnot though, it’s not very good quality, and there is a counter the
\nwhole time.  I mean, this wasn’t really meant to be watched for
\nentertainment purposes.  Screenshots of the release can be found
\n
\nhere<\/a>. 
\n(Don’t worry, I don’t THINK they consider screenshots to be stealing
\nyet ;))  Plus, it’s worth the $6 to $10 for a ticket, depending on
\nwhat your theater charges…  I went to the theater.  I
\nenjoyed it.<\/p>\n

Apparently, the MPAA released this statement the same day, talking
\nabout how online piracy is an outrage and hurting the entertainment
\nindustry.  Let’s examine their statement, shall we?<\/p>\n

(my comments will be found in parentheses, just like this sentance.)<\/p>\n

\nD.C.<\/i> – – Responding to news reports today that BitTorrent is
\nalready facilitating the illegal file sharing of the final Star Wars
\nepisode,  <\/font>Revenge of
\nthe Sith<\/font><\/em> which opens in
\ntheaters today, Motion Picture Association of America, Inc. (MPAA)
\nPresident and CEO Dan Glickman made the following statement: <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

\n<\/p>\n

\u201cThere
\nis no better example of how theft dims the magic of the movies for
\neveryone than this report today regarding BitTorrent providing users
\nwith illegal copies of <\/font>Revenge
\nof the Sith.<\/font><\/em> The
\nunfortunate fact is this type of theft happens on a regular basis on
\npeer to peer networks all over the world. <\/font>\n<\/p>\n

(That is unfortunate that no better
\nexample exists, because I fail to see how it would dim the magic of
\nmovies for everyone if I were to download Revenge of the Sith.)\n<\/p>\n

\u201cFans
\nhave been lined up for days to see <\/font>Revenge
\nof the Sith. <\/font><\/em>To preserve
\nthe quality of movies for fans like these and so many others, we must
\nstop these Internet thieves from illegally trading valuable
\ncopyrighted materials on-line.<\/font><\/p>\n

(To preserve the quality for those
\nfans?  Please explain how someone downloading a movie online
\nsomehow deteriorates the film that is projected in movie
\ntheaters?  What?  You say you are losing money and so in the
\nfuture movies will have lower budgets?  We will examine this
\nmomentarily.)\n<\/p>\n

\u201cIf
\npiracy and those who profit from it are allowed to flourish, they
\nwill erode an engine of economic growth and job creation; undermine
\nlegitimate businesses that strive to unite technology and content in
\ninnovative and legal ways and limit quality and consumer choice.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n

(I am not really sure who profits from
\npiracy.  I have often wondered about this actually, because if I
\nwere to download any movies or tv shows, etc, I would be doing it
\nabsolutely free of charge.  I don’t really think that anyone is
\ngetting rich off of online piracy.)\n<\/p>\n

Glickman
\nsaid that the average movie costs $98 million to make and market.
\n<\/font>Less than on<\/font>e in ten movies
\nre-coup their original investment from the domestic box
\noffice and six in ten never recoup
\ntheir investment<\/font> <\/font>. The
\naverage BitTorrent network has up to 2.5 million users a day. The
\nmovie industry is the only industry with a positive balance of
\ntrade in countries with which it does business. Copyrighted
\nindustries are responsible for an estimated $626 billion of the total
\ngross domestic product.<\/font><\/p>\n

(The figures in this paragraph are true,
\nhowever, they are completely irrelevant to both bit torrent and file
\nsharing in general.  The same thing was true before the sharing of
\nmovies online was feasible.  Most movies lose money.  That
\nhas nothing to do with filesharing, despite what the above statement
\nimplies.)\n<\/p>\n

(In addition, let’s look at how much
\nmoney Revenge of the Sith lost due to filesharing.  It apparently
\nlost so much money that it set 2 new records: the biggest opening day
\nof all time, and the biggest single day of all time.  The first
\nday in theaters, it pulled in$50,013,859.  Damn those file sharers.  I bet not even one of them paid for a ticket.)\n <\/p>\n

\u201cMy
\nmessage to illegal file swappers everywhere is plain and simple: You
\nare stealing, it is wrong and you are not anonymous,\u201d said
\nGlickman. \u201cIn short, you can click, but you can’t hide. There are
\nlots of ways to legally download our products through companies like
\nCinemaNow, Movielink, Ruckus and others.\u201d
\n<\/font><\/font>\n<\/p>\n

 (Actually, you are incorrect, Mr.
\nGlickman.  Illegal file swappers are not stealing.  They
\nwould be stealing if they picked up a DVD and took it from the store,
\nor if they took the film reel from a theater.  They are actually
\ndoing something called “infringing copyright”, which, while still
\ntechnically illegal, is not stealing, and should not be referred to as
\nsuch.  If stealing is taking the film reel, infringing copyright
\nis sneaking into the movie theater.  Understand the
\ndifference?  Besides, people infringe copyright all the
\ntime.  Recording a television show is copyright infringement. 
\nAlso, are scare tactics really neccessary?  Did you know that most
\nfilesharers that I know go to more movies (hence paying for them) and
\nbuy more cds then most non-filesharers that I know?  I doubt that
\nthis is a rarity.)\n<\/p>\n

The
\nMotion Picture Association is engaged in an all out effort to root
\nout Internet movie thieves and make them pay the consequences of
\nillegally downloading and swapping movies on-line. It has hundreds
\nof investigators looking into these kinds of cases worldwide and has
\nalready been successful in shutting down several BitTorrent type
\nsites. As part of its anti-piracy effort, the MPAA and its member
\ncompanies have brought lawsuits against many Internet movie thieves
\nacross the United States and plan to continue such action.
\n<\/font><\/p>\n

(Look…
\ntake a lesson from the RIAA.  No matter what you do, filesharing
\nwill continue.  And the fact of the matter is, you should let
\nit.  Your belief that it hurts you is unfounded, as most evidence
\npoints that that is not the case.  If you want more movies to make
\nmore money, stop making crap.  Don’t blame filesharers for your
\nown flops.  6 out of 10 movies don’t make all their money
\nback.  Those are the movies that no one cares about… and
\nfilesharers won’t even download for free.)
