(MPAA)<br \/>\nPresident and CEO Dan Glickman made the following statement:  <\/font>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u201c<font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">There<br \/>\nis no better example of how theft dims the magic of the movies for<br \/>\neveryone than this report today regarding BitTorrent providing users<br \/>\nwith illegal copies of&nbsp;<\/font><em><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">Revenge<br \/>\nof the Sith.<\/font><\/em><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">  The<br \/>\nunfortunate fact is this type of theft happens on a regular basis on<br \/>\npeer to peer networks all over the world.  <\/font>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">(That is unfortunate that no better<br \/>\nexample exists, because I fail to see how it would dim the magic of<br \/>\nmovies for everyone if I were to download Revenge of the Sith.)\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u201c<font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">Fans<br \/>\nhave been lined up for days to see&nbsp;<\/font><em><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">Revenge<br \/>\nof the Sith.  <\/font><\/em><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">To preserve<br \/>\nthe quality of movies for fans like these and so many others, we must<br \/>\nstop these Internet thieves from illegally trading valuable<br \/>\ncopyrighted materials on-line.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">(To preserve the quality for those<br \/>\nfans?&nbsp; Please explain how someone downloading a movie online<br \/>\nsomehow deteriorates the film that is projected in movie<br \/>\ntheaters?&nbsp; What?&nbsp; You say you are losing money and so in the<br \/>\nfuture movies will have lower budgets?&nbsp; We will examine this<br \/>\nmomentarily.)\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u201c<font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">If<br \/>\npiracy and those who profit from it are allowed to flourish, they<br \/>\nwill erode an engine of economic growth and job creation; undermine<br \/>\nlegitimate businesses that strive to unite technology and content in<br \/>\ninnovative and legal ways and limit quality and consumer choice.\u201d<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">(I am not really sure who profits from<br \/>\npiracy.&nbsp; I have often wondered about this actually, because if I<br \/>\nwere to download any movies or tv shows, etc, I would be doing it<br \/>\nabsolutely free of charge.&nbsp; I don&#8217;t really think that anyone is<br \/>\ngetting rich off of online piracy.)\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">Glickman<br \/>\nsaid that the average movie costs $98 million to make and market.  <font color=\"#0000ff\"><br \/>\n<\/font><font color=\"#000000\">Less than on<\/font>e in&nbsp;ten&nbsp;movies<br \/>\nre-coup their original investment&nbsp;from the domestic&nbsp;box<br \/>\noffice&nbsp;and six&nbsp;<font color=\"#000000\">in ten never recoup<br \/>\ntheir investment<\/font><font color=\"#0000ff\">&nbsp;<\/font>.  The<br \/>\naverage BitTorrent network has up to 2.5 million users a day.  The<br \/>\nmovie industry is the only industry with a positive balance of<br \/>\ntrade&nbsp;in countries with which it does business.  Copyrighted<br \/>\nindustries are responsible for an estimated $626 billion of the total<br \/>\ngross domestic product.<\/font><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">(The figures in this paragraph are true,<br \/>\nhowever, they are completely irrelevant to both bit torrent and file<br \/>\nsharing in general.&nbsp; The same thing was true before the sharing of<br \/>\nmovies online was feasible.&nbsp; Most movies lose money.&nbsp; That<br \/>\nhas nothing to do with filesharing, despite what the above statement<br \/>\nimplies.)\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">(In addition, let&#8217;s look at how much<br \/>\nmoney Revenge of the Sith lost due to filesharing.&nbsp; It apparently<br \/>\nlost so much money that it set 2 new records: the biggest opening day<br \/>\nof all time, and the biggest single day of all time.&nbsp; The first<br \/>\nday in theaters, it pulled in$50,013,859.&nbsp; Damn those file sharers.&nbsp; I bet not even one of them paid for a ticket.)\n <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">\u201c<font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">My<br \/>\nmessage to illegal file swappers everywhere is plain and simple:  You<br \/>\nare stealing, it is wrong and you are not anonymous,\u201d said<br \/>\nGlickman.  \u201cIn short, you can click, but you can&#8217;t hide.  There are<br \/>\nlots of ways to legally download our products through companies like<br \/>\nCinemaNow, Movielink, Ruckus and others.\u201d    <font color=\"#0000ff\"><br \/>\n<\/font><\/font>\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\">&nbsp;(Actually, you are incorrect, Mr.<br \/>\nGlickman.&nbsp; Illegal file swappers are not stealing.&nbsp; They<br \/>\nwould be stealing if they picked up a DVD and took it from the store,<br \/>\nor if they took the film reel from a theater.&nbsp; They are actually<br \/>\ndoing something called &#8220;infringing copyright&#8221;, which, while still<br \/>\ntechnically illegal, is not stealing, and should not be referred to as<br \/>\nsuch.&nbsp; If stealing is taking the film reel, infringing copyright<br \/>\nis sneaking into the movie theater.&nbsp; Understand the<br \/>\ndifference?&nbsp; Besides, people infringe copyright all the<br \/>\ntime.&nbsp; Recording a television show is copyright infringement.&nbsp;<br \/>\nAlso, are scare tactics really neccessary?&nbsp; Did you know that most<br \/>\nfilesharers that I know go to more movies (hence paying for them) and<br \/>\nbuy more cds then most non-filesharers that I know?&nbsp; I doubt that<br \/>\nthis is a rarity.)\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0in;\"><font face=\"Arial, sans-serif\">The<br \/>\nMotion Picture Association is engaged in an all out effort to root<br \/>\nout Internet movie thieves and make them pay the consequences of<br \/>\nillegally downloading and swapping movies on-line.  It has hundreds<br \/>\nof investigators looking into these kinds of cases worldwide and has<br \/>\nalready been successful in shutting down several BitTorrent type<br \/>\nsites.
